Introducing Phoenix Martins – Heart Strings

Phoenix Martins has just released the video for her debut single ‘Heart Strings’.  The visuals are a beautiful urban glowing nightscene with Martins taking a stroll with a red flare while she sings her floaty dreamlike new tune in her unique style; one we would describe as Lana Del Ray meets Kate Bush with a cool hipster East London vibe.  Its a stunning video that fits with the song perfectly and doesn’t distract from her amazing vocals.

The British-Nigerian singer/songwriter Phoenix Martins is set to release her debut single ‘Heartstrings’ on 24th June 2013. She has worked with an array of artists in the studio and on the road including The Noisettes, Fife Dangerfield and Ebony Bones and has featured as part of Damon Albarn’s Africa Express cross-cultural collaborations project.

The singer has also been supported by the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, Wonderland, Afropunk, Earmilk etc.  The new video is ensuring Phoenix Martins gets the press attention she deserves and this week was premiered on MTV’s The Wrap Up.

Dancehall Anthems – Summer 2013

Dancehall Anthems – Summer 2013

Ok, so we finally saw a bit of sunshine in London today.  When the sun comes out – Dancehall comes on.  With Nottinghill Carnival on the near horizon (25th and 26th August 2013) what better time than now to start scouting out the best tunes for the Dancehall scene this summer.  Here’s our top 3 – fresh out of Jamaica – with some blinding summer riddims to make you wanna whine and kotch.

First Up – can’t stop playing it – straight out of Portmore Jamaica- DAMINANCE with ‘Tipsy’ (released January 2013).  Move over Popcaan someone about to take ur place – ‘ s one to watch.  Daminance, aka Kimarlo Williams, 24, is a Jamaican Dancehall singer / song writer who started singing at a very young age. Initially he formed band ‘Frass Squad’ in 2006 (along with his Yung Outlawz Productions label) and then went on to start his solo career with stage name ‘Robbery’ – now known as ‘Daminance’.  Daminance is currently working on a mixtape along with producer Prince Villa.  Also check out his tune ‘Da Party’.  In the meantime here’s ‘Tipsy’ :

Second up to get you into the summer carnival mood is Flash Raggedy with ‘Party’.  Flash Raggedy, aka Miguel Beckford, hails from Rockfort, Kingston, Jamaica.  Flash has also been singing from a young age and like many big stars starting out singing at Church on a Sunday.  Here’s ‘Party’:

J Capri ft Charly Black – Whine and Kotch.  Not much more to say other than watch the video.  Nice to see a female dancehall artiste aside from Lady Saw.  Definately prefer this to her more current collaboration with Konshens – ‘Pull up to mi Bumper’  – the girl obviously only got one ting on her mind 😉

Dont forget to follow on soundcloud @whenmiparty – here’s our 2013 carnival playlist – enjoy and shake your tail feather

The London urban music scene never fails to disappoint for constantly creating new promising acts set to be the next Wretch 32 or Miss Dynamite.  This week we’ve found 3 artists showing potential and what it takes to crack into the mainstream.  Every day we’re sent links to mixtapes or videos from Londoners thinking they’re the next Tupac.  Here are our 3 diamonds in the rough:

First up, L’Nino with ‘B.I.G’.  If you can get over the unneccessary over usage of the F word in the chorus (not the best move if you want to get airplay) – the video production and L’Nino’s rapping is actually pretty good; less grimey and more West Coast; shows L’Nino’s massive rapping potential as a UK artist – could definitely see him collaborating with a US rapper.

Next up is West London’s AbilityMc (TWITTER @AbilityMc1 ) , 18. We can’t get enough of his tune ‘Zone Out with Me’. We love how AbilityMc has kept it real with his West London accent shining through his lyrics. This one is chilled with a capital C. Saweet.

Last but not least, my absolute favourite right now – Smurf (twitter @SmurfUK) with his new video ‘I Ain’t Havin’ It’.  The Link Up Tv video is the money, styling is spot on and Smurf can spit like many can only dream; plus he looks good doing it and he makes it look effortless.  The only thing worth critising is the name – SMURF – surely there must be story behing that?  You can get his free download by clicking here

Smurf’s even done a Popcaan cover.  Nice. Enjoy ‘Party Shot‘ London style:
